Everything New in August 2024 (Bugs, Fish, Seasonal Items)

In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, August sets the stage for a busy Spring and Fall season, with few new critters to catch but big weekend events and shopping opportunities. New bugs, fish, and deep-sea creatures are sadly few and far between in August. However, the weekly Fireworks Show event gives players and villagers the opportunity to celebrate four weekends in a row.
August continues the lazy, laidback attitude of July in Animal Crossing, with a limited rotation of new critters to catch. Players are still encouraged to keep an eye out for particularly rare critters, as some can take months to reappear once they leave the rotation. However, even if players aren’t working towards completing Museum collections, the weekly Fireworks Show provides many opportunities to catch up with villagers.

I’m Afraid Animal Crossing Has Already Peaked
I’m still fond of modern Animal Crossing games, but the thing that I love most about the series isn’t really there anymore, and I miss it a lot.

Bug catchers in the Northern Hemisphere still have plenty to do in August, as 21 different bugs will exit the rotation at the end of the month. This includes typical summer bugs such as cicadas and many of the stag beetle species, such as Animal Crossing’s Giraffe Stag. These are often rare and have high sell prices, making them prime targets for dedicated collectors.

During the Fireworks Show, a continuous fireworks display will occur, and players can participate in Redd’s Raffle, run by the sly fox best known for trading in artworks and forgeries. There are a total of 24 different prizes to be won from Redd’s Raffle:

For each raffle entry, players must spend 500 Bells. Isabelle will also give players one of four different headboppers as a free gift, and each headbopper will feature a new design.
Finally, players can also design their own custom fireworks patterns. If spoken to during the Fireworks Show, Isabelle will offer the option to select up to ten custom design patterns from players’ NookPhones. Players can select different custom designs to appear in the fireworks display and even set the order in which they appear. This makes the Fireworks Show an unmissable event for artists and designers, who get the chance to show off their most creative custom designs.

ACNH Sequel Can Have Summer Events Better Than Fireworks
Plenty of Animal Crossing fans have been speculating about a New Horizons sequel, and many feel that it could add new and improved summer events.
Aside from the Fireworks Show, players in the Northern Hemisphere can also enjoy Bug-Off on Saturday, August 24th. Flick runs the Bug-Off event, and players can participate in a bug-catching tournament to catch as many bugs as possible in three minutes. Catching bugs earns points, which can be exchanged for bug-themed items from Flick. It’s worth noting that participation in the tournament is free the first time, but subsequent attempts cost 500 Bells each.
Flick will also buy any bugs from the player at 150% of their usual sell price.
Southern Hemisphere players will need to wait until November 16th for Bug-Off. There are also a few Nook Shopping events for players to keep track of. These limited-time shopping events celebrate real-world events by putting up a few event-exclusive items for purchase:

Overall, the lack of new critters is likely to disappoint anyone aiming to complete their Museum collections. However, the Fireworks Show does make up for it, giving players the chance to celebrate not once but four times. As such, events and shopping will be the focus for most players in Animal Crossing: New Horizons in August 2024.
