The two-legged and four-legged traffic was brisk at the annual Dog Wash for Guide Dogs. As usual, it was held in the parking lot of the Northern Occasions Store on Lakeshore Drive. The beneficiary is the Lions Foundation for Guide Dogs.

This is the second fundraiser for this cause as last weekend saw the annual Dog Walk for Guide Dogs take place at the North Bay Waterfront.

Melanie Pigeau has been running the event for about a decade and commented on why it remains popular.

“We seem to find a good system, and we continue to do it,” says Pigeau. “I know a lot of people who have tried this, and it happens for a single year, and they don’t do it again.

Pigeau thinks her system works due to a great support staff.

“I have a good team here. I always make sure I have several veterinarian professionals here and plenty of student volunteers. The support is what makes it all work at the end of the day.”

It has been a tough year for some local fundraisers when it comes to reaching their goals. Not this fundraiser.

“Last year we brought in just over $16,000 for both events. The goal this year was $18,000. At the end of the walk we were at just over $19,000,” says a very happy Pigeau. “We would not be surprised if we hit $20,000 this year.”

That would be a remarkable feat given the current climate.
